This summer holiday we are very lucky enough to be on an incredible family road trip across the Pacific Northwest. We’ve given my 19 and 22-year-old cousins free reign of our house (not sure who is more excited – us or them!) and headed away for a month of camping, cycling and (hopefully) sunshine. Our accommodation varies from campsites, hotels (where we’re staying free using points I’ve collected) and Airbnb’s, as we go from Vancouver through a few of the Western states of the USA before heading back into Canada for our return flight from Calgary.
Along the way we’ll be trying to find some incredible locations to go cycling with our two boys (N aged 11 and T aged 8) – primarily on mountain bikes, but also in cities when we feel it’s safe enough.
Our planned route is (was – I’ll be updating as I can as we progress)
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada – we’ve spent a great couple of days recovering from our jetlag, and enjoyed some cycling in the Pacific Spirit Regional Park before picking up an injury which has curtailed our activity somewhat. You can read my blog about our time in Vancouver here.
Washington State, USA – some camping followed by a few days in Seattle
Oregon State, USA – including a couple of days in Portland, where we’re looking forward to experiencing their renowned cycling infrastructure and popping in to see the Islabikes US HQ
Bend, Oregon, USA – Time for the mountain biking to commence! Over the past year, we’ve become massive mountain biking fans, and we’re really looking forward to all the single track the Rockies have to offer.
Ketchum, Idaho, USA – Ketchum and Sun Valley are renowned for their family-friendly mountain biking, so we’re going to call in on our way to…
Helena, Montana, USA – which also claims to be the perfect mountain biking location!
Fernie, BC, Canada – Our final stopping point will be back over the border into Canada, at Fernie. We went there last year for two days and had an incredible time, and vowed to go back again if we had the chance. The single track is amazing and this year we’re planning on spending a bit more time there (assuming the area remains fire-free).
We’ll be hiring bikes en-route, and looking for great locations to cycle with the two boys. If you have any suggestions on the best routes to ride, places to hire bikes, eat great veggie food or just generally chill out, please leave us a comment below, or contact us via Facebook or email.
