This morning was the eagerly awaited annual “Bike It Breakfast” at our eldest sons school – a great chance for all the cycling families to get together and enjoy a leisurely breakfast before school starts.
Last years was glorious – loads of families seated on picnic blankets or at the school benches, enjoying the summer sunshine. Envious kids who’d arrived in cars were hassling their parents as to why they couldn’t have their breakfast at school.
Fast forward a year, and it’s not quite the same. About 10 dedicated families had braved the rain, and valiantly gathered in the school hall.
Waterproofs had to be peeled off before we could settle down to the food, and there were pitiful looks from those who’d chosen more sheltered forms of transport.
However, the boys loved it – it’s not every day you get to picnic in the school hall in soggy trousers!
And when I spoke to a colleague on the phone shortly after starting work she said “You sound cheerful this morning”!
I didn’t try to explain that it was all down to a bracing ride in the rain and a Bike It Breakfast before work – what a great way to start the day!
Next year though, can we please have the sun back???
