Celebrating the UK’s 100 Women in Cycling 2022

Here at Cycle Sprog HQ we are VERY proud today.  Our content editor, Saskia Heijltjes, has been named one of Cycling UK's 100 Women in Cycling for 2022!

Saskia was nominated and chosen for the amazing work she's been doing around her home town in Bath and on a wider scale with the Kidical Mass campaign.

As a mum of two, Saskia was frustrated with the lack of safe infrastructure her local neighbourhood, so in 2021 she co-founded Kidical Mass Bath

This is a regular group ride where families take to the streets to show that people of all ages and abilities want to cycle.

As Kidical Mass has grown in popularity Saskia has also helped other groups across the UK to set up their own events.

As Bicycle Mayor for Bath, Saskia has raised the profile of cycling in Bath and beyond - you can see her speaking at a local council meeting.

Congratulations Saskia - a very well deserved award.

But we're also really pleased to see that a large number of other award winners have been recognised for their work in the family cycling area.

Award winners this year have been teaching children to cycle, campaigning for safer spaces for children and families to cycle, and acting as role models for cycling - ranging from competing on the international stage to doing the school run by bike.

Massive congratulations to all the recipients of Cycling UK's 100 Women in Cycling award for 2022 who include:

Amelie Eaton - 10 year old BMXer who is three times British Championships for her age group and represented Team GB at The 2022 World Championships in France

Anna Hay - an award winning Bikeability instructor who has taught countless children and is delivering the "Bikeability Plus scheme" encouraging more children to cycle to school

Anna Smith  - the driving force behind Kidical Mass and Platt Fields Bike Hub in Manchester

Becky Cox - helping make Swindon’s streets more people friendly, often seen cycling with her toddler in tow

Charlotte Reeves -  president of the charity Charlotte’s Tandems, which lends tandems and tag-alongs to anyone with a disability or additional need and enables families all over the UK to cycle

Emily Benham Kvale - role model for returning to competitive cycling post-pregnancy. In 2019 she won every single international mountain bike orienteering event that she took part in, after taking a year out to have a baby

Emily Groves - has taught over 6,000 children to ride a bike in Bradford

Emma Downey -  founder of 'Teen BMXercise', which aims to engage more teenage girls in cycling and BMX

Helen Hirst - delivers Bikeability training in schools

Julie Cunningham - Cycling UK’s development officer for women and girls in Scotland

Kat Heath - a leading light in the Kidical Mass organisation, both locally in Reading and nationwide

Kate Ball - campaigner for better cycling infrastructure in Derby and can be seen using her e-tandem for the school run

Kate Jenkins - has trained thousands of children to cycle at Watford Cycle Hub which she founded 10 years ago

Kath Finn - coaches young people and visually-impaired cyclists in Kendal, and who also supported Cycle Sprog's founders in their journey of recovery from Long Covid, ensuring you're reading this article

Liz Matthews - set up Cyclebuddy through which she teaches adults and children to ride, inspiring them with her love of cycling

Lucy Dance - family cycling role model and Sustrans Bike-it officer in Brighton

Lyn Brayshaw - family cycling role model and chair of Southampton Cycling Campaign

Lucie Allen - established Bournemouth's first school bike bus

Menekse Ayrilmaz - organises and manages cycling classes for Turkish-speaking children with Londra Bisiklet Kulubu (London Cycling Club)

Rebecca Mountford  - Bicycle Mayor of Cheltenham who champions the use of cargo bikes for families as an alternative way to travel

Yasmin Emerson - family cycling champion and campaigner with Camcycle

This is just a small selection of the women who are making change happen in the world of cycling.
