The 2018 Tour de France jersey design has been revealed, and the kids size replica TDF jerseys are just becoming available in the shops.
For 2018 there has been a redesign, with the usual collar being removed for a slightly more streamlined look. There is also what the organisers have called a “Mondrian-style pattern”. Can you see it?
I have to confess to having ABSOLUTELY no idea what they were talking about – so I Googled “Mondrian” and discovered that Piet Mondrian was the Dutch artist responsible for this:
Aha – yes – I recognise him now, and my lack of art history knowledge has been exposed! A quick look back at the yellow jersey and I can just about make out the geometrical blocks of slightly darker yellow. I’m not quite sure why they’ve chosen Mondrain to influence this years jerseys. It’s not a major anniversary of his birth (1872) or death (1944), and the Grand Depart isn’t from his home town of Amersfoort in The Netherlands. The only link I can think of is that he lived and worked in Paris for several decades. If you know a better reason as to why they’ve chosen a Mondrian inspiration for this years TDF jerseys, do let me know in the comments section below!
There’s also a kids sized King of the Mountains jersey available, but I’m really struggling to see the Mondrain blocks on it:
Every year the kids size TDF jerseys sell out really quickly. Chain Reaction Cycles and Wiggle currently have some left in stock, priced £60, but they don’t have the smaller sizes.
