AT LAST!!! It finally seems as if winter may be behind us, and spring truly here! So what’s happening in family cycling this month?
Petitioning government for better family cycling
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there were safe routes for our families to cycle everyday? Suddenly cycling has risen up the political agenda, following the reporting back of the Get Britain Cycling’ parliamentary inquiry.
Parents everywhere are being urged to sign an e-petition that calls for the government to take up all the recommendations included in the report produced by the inquiry. If you haven’t signed already do it NOW! It only takes moments so click here
Parents in Scotland also have a wonderful chance to show their politicians that this matters to them when Pedal on Parliament takes place on Sunday 19th May – find out how to get involved in this day out for all the family.
Front mounted child bike seats
It seems as if everyone is having their first experiences of using front bike seats at the moment! These increasing popular seats allow you to ride with your child in front of you, and offer an alternative to the traditional rear bike seat.
A number of cycling parents have been blogging about their first experiences of riding with the Yepp Mini front bike seat.
Cathy Bussey took her daughter Cherry for their first ride together and has written all about it here.
This inspired Daddy BabberBlog, who took 12 month old Cam for their long anticipated first spin too.
Here at Cycle Sprog, we asked Juliet Kemp to tell us how she got on using the Polisport Guppy Mini front seat with her 13 month old Leon for the first time. You can find out how Juliet, Leon and Juliet’s knees, got on here.
The Yepp Mini is available in a wide range of colours, whilst the Polisport Guppy comes in 3 colour combinations, including the new ice blue and white.
If you want more information on using a front child bike seat, check out the Cycle Sprog guide.
Cycling whilst pregnant
Whether to continue to cycle when pregnant can be a difficult decision to make, and there has been very little informed information out there for mums (and dads) to be. This is slowly changing, and recently two cycling pro’s have been talking about their views on cycling when expecting their babies.
Paralympic legend Dame Sarah Storey is still cycling whilst heavily pregnant. You can read an interview with her on the Women’s Cycling website
Meanwhile, Suzie Mitchell who won the UCI Track Cycling Masters World Championships just 4 months after giving birth to her daughter has been giving advice over on the Totally on the Total Womens Cycling website
Getting out and about on a family bike ride
Now the winter weather is finally behind us it’s been lovely to see so many families out cycling together. As well as lot of children out for rides with their parents, we’ve been seeing lots of trailgators and tagalongs out and about near us in the past couple of weeks.
For lots of ideas on where to cycle with you family this spring, check out our family cycle routes section here.
If you’ve been riding for the first time this year we’d love to hear all about it, and feature your pictures in our new gallery!
Finally, this month we’re saying goodbye to….. Free Range Kids
The Sustrans campaign has now finished (cumulating in a petition to the government). This does mean that the Free Range Kids website has been decommissioned, but thankfully Sustrans have kept most of the material on their new look website.
